Paul finishes verse 18 by telling us that if we are led by the Spirit we are not under the law. Now in verses 19-21 the thought moves to the works of the flesh, which are: Adultery, whoredom (sexual immorality), uncleanness, lasciviousness (lustfulness), idolatry, witchcraft (sorcery), hatred, strifes, emulations (jealousies), wraths (outbursts of anger), rivalries, dissensions (divisions), sects (heresies), envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings (orgies), and things like these, of which I tell you, as I also told you before, that those doing such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

Now as Paul wrote to us under the guidance of the Holy Spirt, to inform us of the Truth, allow me to take one at a time and explain our responsibility. Adultery needs little explanation, if you are married, it is physical relations with someone other than your spouse. Whoredoms, is loose living, sexual relations with others outside of marriage. Uncleanness, in a moral sense: the impurity of lustful, luxurious, profligate living (wasting money and resources). Lasciviousness, to be filled with lust. Men or women who look at others with lust, the desire to have sexual relations with that person. Some are consumed with these thoughts 24/7, it leads to more sinful behaviour. Idolatry, putting anything before God in our lives, things or as in Bible times, other gods made of wood, stone or metal. Sorcery, there are some who practice a religion of Wiccan, they believe that they are witches or maybe just belong to a coven. This is sinful and wrong, others “play with” tarot cards, read tea leaves, and other such things that would be considered the dark side/evil. Hatred, for some, unfortunately, this has become a way of life. we see it every day when people harm and even kill others for no reason other than who they are, what they wear, or because of their occupation (law enforcement officers). The hate mongers enjoy the pain that they cause others. This is absolutely wrong for one who claims the name of Christ, as are the others, we need to share the love of Christ, not the hate of satan.

A couple more, than we will finish them up next week. Strife, this would be akin to electioneering, a desire to put oneself forward, a partisan and fractious spirit which does not disdain low arts. We see this in our presidential election process. Some overlook the crimes of their candidate just because of their political party. Again, for the Christian, this should NEVER be the case, wrong should always be wrong, no matter the case. We have to much strife being caused by people in power in order to gain more power. There are people who have much to gain by all of this unrest that they cause. Racial, political, sectarian, all of this violence benefits some who are seeking to control. This should NEVER be the case in the church, there is only one side in the church, that is Gods side!

Let’s finish up today with emulations (jealousy), many in the world today are jealous of others, what they have, the color of their skin, where they live, the position they have been given. Paul tells us elsewhere in Scripture to be content with what we have. If you want more, work for it, no one owes it to you! Pray for it, live for Jesus and trust Him to supply all of your needs, learn to depend on God for the things that you have need of. You will never go wrong. We will finish the works of the flesh next week.

Come back for more…
