Church Growth

We have many churches in the United States today who are dead and dying. Now many people may speculate as to the reason for this, but I think I know the reason for this. They have ceased to witness and win souls for the Lord Jesus Christ, they have stopped proclaiming the gospel and started getting into social issues. When an individual follows the Lord’s commands he’s blessed for following, the same is true of any church. If you followed God’s commands to the church the church is blessed, and if not the blessings do not come. Let’s look into some Scriptures dealing with this issue.

Matthew chapter 28 versus 19 and 20; “Go you therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, and the sun, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even to the end of the world. Amen.” As we see in the Lord’s command to his disciples, which we claim to be. We’re to be taking the gospel into all the world, the gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ. Jesus says to us that he is the way, the truth, and the life no man comes to the father but by him. There is no other way to get to heaven except through the Lord Jesus Christ, there is no other Savior of the world, there is no other religion that can get you to heaven. Too many churches have ceased to follow his command and take the gospel to the world, they’ve got involved with social issues, you may ask what social issues? How about homosexual rights, how about abortion, how about women’s rights, how about ecological issues, and on and on. And may I say that those issues are not biblical therefore they could be classified as biblically correct their politically correct. But the thinking person understands one must be biblically correct in order to be a Christian.

In the gospel of Mark chapter 16 verse 15; “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” Here in this Scripture Jesus is telling us to take the gospel to all the world, every creature. Not to pick it, protest, and parade for every sinful world weight issue becomes down the politically correct pike! Biblically speaking homosexuality is a sin, God does not create homosexuals, the worldly desires do. He says here in Mark that were to go into all the world, that means we get out of our four walls of the church facility and go into the world door-to-door, where we buy our goods throughout the week, to our workplaces, wherever there are lost people the church needs to take the gospel. Now as I said many churches are not doing this, therefore they are dying from lack of following God’s word.

In the book of acts chapter 1 in verse 8, ”But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” Now the Holy Spirit came and asked chapter 2, now the church needs to be out witnessing for the Lord Jesus Christ. This brings us to another problem, too many pastors have allowed Satan to convince them that door-to-door soul winning does not work anymore. I would like to say to those lazy pastors that it still works. It’s the way that Jesus told us to win our part of the world, in the gospel of Luke chapter 14 verse 23: God’s word says, “And the Lord said unto the servant, go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.” Every pastor ought to be a soul winner, every Christian ought to be a soul winner! If your church hasn’t baptized anyone in the past year because nobody’s gotten saved, you have a lazy pastor. If the pastor can’t go out and at least get one person to Jesus and baptize them in 12 months he shouldn’t be the pastor of the church. As Dr. Lee Roberson said many years ago, “Everything rises and falls on leadership”, so as the pastor is the under shepherd to the Lord Jesus Christ in the church he serves, he is the leader.

Some other Scriptures that deal with soul winning, Proverbs 11 verse 30; “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.” Now some people misinterpret this verse to mean that the Holy Spirit is wise when people get saved. Now this is a fallacy, because the Holy Spirit is part of the triune Godhead which makes him wise no matter who gets saved and who doesn’t. What it’s talking about is an individual person who goes out with the purpose of trying to lead people to Jesus Christ.

Daniel chapter 12 verse 3, “And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars forever and ever”. And here again as a follow-up the thought contained in Proverbs 11 is saying that those wise people who are soul winners, will shine brighter in heaven than those who have no concern for souls. Now many liberals disagree with my premise here and so do even some so-called fundamentalists or conservatives. My thought on that is that they would rather play golf than share the gospel. They would rather set in their offices and hide from the real people on the outside who are lost and undone in their sins and need to be told about a Savior. It’s a very sad state that the church has come to in the United States today. Many pulpits have wolves rather than shepherds, churches have lowered their standards in order to find someone who will preach the way they want.

Sin is still wrong, hell it is still hot, heaven is still sweet, and the Savior is ready and willing to save all who will come to him. Now let’s get off of our backsides and go out into the world and proclaim the word of the Lord Jesus Christ! Share the gospel with someone today that there may be rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God! Let’s work till Jesus comes.

Thank you, more next time.
